on getting dressed
When we first brought Isaac home, I spent most of my time wearing whatever I'd worn to bed the night before. The first month can be such a shock to your daily rhythm that you can hardly even think about what to wear. I basically only got dressed for church on Sundays.
I started noticing that I felt good about myself on Sundays and could handle the craziness of being a new parent better on those days. Maybe it's because my loungewear collection is mostly t shirts from my college debate championships or maybe it's because PJ day at school was the only day I wore pajamas all day (or out of the house), but I don't feel quite myself if I don't get dressed.
I decided that getting out of pajamas and into "real clothes" was something I needed to do as a mom, even if it looked totally different from my life before Isaac was born.
tank top, button front high rise jeans from last year (similar), slide sandals (similar), watch
I'm not really a homebody. I like to be outside and enjoy the weather (yes, even the hot weather)! I like to feel like I interacted with the outside world. I didn't realize how important this is to my mental health until I started making it a point to wear my clothes.
Because here's the thing: it can feel weird to put jeans on when you know you're gonna spend the majority of your time in bed or nursing in the rocking chair or attempting to nap when your baby naps. And it seems silly to get dressed just to stay home.
My solution was to take a walk. It gets me and Isaac out of the house, it doesn't cost me anything and it sneaks some much needed movement into my life.
Making a big deal out of getting dressed seemed kind of shallow when I first thought about it. But it makes me a better mom, so it's really not frivolous at all! It doesn't matter if your best comes from being dressed in sweats or jeans. What matters is that we each do whatever little things make us feel like we can take on the adventure of parenting.
